Breast/Ovarian Health 101 Educational Workshops

Workshop Overview
Breast/Ovarian Health 101 is a one-hour educational workshop created for all women between the ages of 18-45 who are interested in understanding what their lifetime risk of breast/ovarian cancer is and what steps they can take today to be proactive with their health. The workshop consists of a medical professional presentation given by an OB/GYN, a genetic counselor, and community advocate followed by a Bright Pink Girl testimonial, and a question & answer session.

Breast/Ovarian Health 101 workshops are held nationwide and are customized to meet the unique needs of women living in diverse communities. This workshop is generously funded by the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, which is a local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Workshop Structure
The Breast/Ovarian Health 101 Workshop is an hour-long program consisting of the following components:
  • Medical Professional Presentation: The Medical Professional Presentation is an engaging and informative presentation divided into Five Chapters and a sixth supplemental section. A genetic counselor and an OB/GYN (or other qualified medical professionals) co-present information, tips and guidance for young women who want to be proactive with their breast & ovarian health, and a community advocate offers tips for overcoming barriers to care.
  • Bright Pink Testimonial: A high-risk young woman advocate shares her personal story, discusses what she learned from her experience and how she is being proactive with her health. She will sometimes also discuss how she got involved with Bright Pink and how other women can become involved also.
  • Questions & Answer Session: Participants are given the chance to engage in a dynamic question and answer session with the medical professionals to address questions or concerns that arise during the presentation.
  • Evaluation: All participants are given a brief pre-test before the presentation begins, and a post-test with the same questions at its completion to test efficacy of the presentation. Completing these evaluations are critical to allow Bright Pink to continue to receive funding for this program.
  • Networking & Socializing: Most sessions are followed by a pink cupcake reception or other similar opportunity to allow participants the opportunity to meet one another and socialize with other women who may have had similar experiences.
